Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?
We are located in the North Building of the Horse Gulch Health Campus in suite N-206.

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a cognitive and behavioral approach that emphasizes the human condition.  ACT utilizes acceptance strategies to human discomfort to allow people to move their lives in a direction that is consistent with their values.

Are there any harmful side effects to neurofeedback?
Although no significant side effects have been observed so far, the ones that we have seen will be discussed with you by your neurofeedback practitioner; and your understanding of them will help you work with us to provide successful treatment.  The side effects sometimes seen with neurofeedback are in the form of temporary increases of the symptoms you already have.  If you experience any side effects, let your neurofeedback practitioner know so that he/she can work closely with you to make adjustments.  This is done the same way medications are adjusted by your physician.

I’m an athlete, would neurofeedback improve my performance?
Yes. Neurofeedback tends to make functioning clearer and easier.  It has increased cognitive functioning (memory, concentration, attention, ability to learn and to read, organizing, and sequencing), motivation (initiating and completing activities), and motor skills (coordination, balance, grace, recovery from paralysis).  It has elevated mood as an antidepressant.  It has improved sleep at night and reduced sleepiness during the day.  It has increased energy and stamina.  It has reduced seizures, explosiveness, irritability, spasticity, and background anxiety.  It has reduced migraine and fibromyalgia pain, as well as restless legs problems.  Athletic performance improves as the brain is better regulated.

I have a very stressful and demanding job, can neurofeedback help me?
Yes.  Any form of psychological distress whether it be anxiety, stress or feeling overwhelmed is a product of dysregulation of the brain functioning.  Stabilizing the brain with neurofeedback can improve regulation thus decreasing psychological distress and improving performance in everyday activities at work and at home.

I’m not good at computer games, will neurofeedback still work for me?
Yes.  Anyone can do it.  You sit in front of a computer and play a video game with your brainwaves, not your hands.  There are sensors attached to your head that read your brainwaves and send a signal to the computer where they are displayed for the psychologist and reflected back to you through the video game activities.  You get rewards in the video game when your brain shows positive results to reinforce the type of brain activity we are targeting.  The more rewards you get, the more positive reinforcement your brain gets for stable, well-regulated brain activity.

Do you offer special pricing for low income households?
Summit Psychology has mental health professionals in training who are supervised by Dr. Miller and can provide services at a reduced cost and on a sliding fee scale.  The number of clients who use the sliding fee scale is limited.  You are encouraged to ask your mental health provider about this option if you are interested.

Does my health insurance cover counseling and/or neurofeedback?
Summit Psychology believes an individuals’ confidentiality is of utmost importance.  For this reason, we are not a provider that submits your confidential information to an insurance company.  We believe no one needs to know you are seeking confidential psychological services unless you want them to know.  Therefore, if you would like to submit an insurance claim to your insurance on your own, Summit Psychology will provide you a superbill if requested so you may submit your claim to your insurance company for reimbursement.
